Graphic Design

Graphic design should be clear, simple and understandable. The only purpose of creating attractive looking design pieces is to "draw the eye" to the message you are trying to deliver. Additionally, the cost of printing your marketing materials should be sustainable in your marketing budget. Spending excessively on materials printed on expensive papers, fancy embossing, etc. is of little value to most clients. If you are a law firm trying to woo CEOs of large corporations and impress them with your class and excellent taste, then maybe yes. But for most businesses, clean, clear design printed nicely on a decent grade of paper communicates "professionalism, attention to detail, successful, but with good common sense in the expenditure of their budget."

Beware though, marketing pieces that look "homegrown" communicate something less flattering such as "fly by night"or at least "unestablished".
